Pedaling for a Purpose: Award-Winning Apparel Design for Waste Management

The Challenge
As Waste Management’s of NorCal/Nevada cycling team grew 400% for the "Waves 2 Wine" National MS Society fundraiser, the existing "company logo on a shirt" approach no longer fit the scale or the mission. I was tasked with creating a new kit that reflected WM’s evolution into an environmental leader.

The Strategy
Drawing on my own experience as a competitive cyclist, I knew the jersey had to stand out in a "sea of spandex." I moved away from literal waste imagery, instead developing a signature abstract graphic based on a compostable leaf. This emphasized the circularity of composting and recycling, using a crisp white and "environmental green" palette to create a fresh, athletic aesthetic.

The Impact
The design won "Best Team Jersey" at the event. More importantly, the visual identity was so successful that Waste Management adopted the design for national use, distributing the jerseys to teams across the United States.
